Dear Mr. Boomer
Thank you for your letter of December ll about the story in the Extra. I understand that Martin Breen has already spoken to you and he has told me your main complaint is about the headline on the story.
First of all. let me say I regret that the headline should have caused you so much upset. It is certainly not the policy of the Extra and indeed. the Belfast Telegraph to cause offence, particularly in the sad and tragic circumstances of the disappearance or your son's aircraft.
The Extra being a tabloid, has a more direct style of journalism than the Belfast Telegraph and is aimed at a slightly different marketplace. Nonetheless. the fact that the treatment of the story caused you annoyance displayed a lack of sensitivity by us on this occasion and for that I apologise.
Yours sincerely.
